Tick-borne encephalitis

It is suggested that the vaccination process should start or finish (the first 2 doses in any case) before spring time (before the period of the ticks starts) i.e. in winter, when there is no risk of infection.

For whom should it be considered?

  • Those who spend or camp more time at the endemic territories (Sweden, Baltic countries, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Russia and Siberia)
  • People who can be endangered by infection during work (foresters, lumberjacks, hunters, and people dealing with wildlife management, collecting plants)

What has to be known on the vaccinations?

It is suggested that the vaccination process should start or finish (the first 2 doses in any case) before spring time (before the period of the ticks starts) i.e. in winter, when there is no risk of infection.

Two types of vaccines are available in Hungary.

In one type the vaccine is available separately for children between the age of 1-12 and people above the age of 12.

Primary vaccination series consists of 3 doses. Dose 2 has to be given 1-3- months after dose 1, and dose 3 9-12 months after dose 2.

In case of shorter time available for the vaccination to take effect, dose 2 can be given at the 7th day after dose 1, and dose 3 at the 21st day after dose 1.

The vaccination takes effect in 14 days after dose 2 the soonest.

In order to achieve a longer period of protection, the first dose of revaccination is needed in 3 years after the primary vaccination. After this, other revaccinations are necessary in every 5 years till the age of 49. Above the age of 49 revaccinations are crucial in every 3 years.

In the other type the vaccine is available separately for children between the age of 1-16 and people above the age of 16.

In this case in the primary vaccination series also 3 doses are necessary for reaching protection. Dose 2 has to be given 1-3 months after dose 1, and dose 3 9-12 months after dose 2. In case of shorter time available for the vaccination to take effect, dose 2 can be given 14 days after dose 1.

In order to achieve a longer period of protection, the first revaccination is needed no longer than 3 years after the 3rd dose of the primary vaccination series. After this, other revaccinations are necessary in 3-5 years till the age of 60. Above the age of 60 revaccinations are crucial in every 3 years.
