People get infected by the bite of infected animals (dog, fox, cat, bat and rarely other animals). There is no cure, only the relief of the suffering is possible. The disease can be found everywhere but the Antarctica, and common in several Central and South American, Asian and African countries.

Problems and symptoms

  • The period of incubation can be several weeks and also some months
  • Itching and sensory loss develops at the place of the bite of the infected animal.
  • Fever, headache, muscle pain
  • Strong itching of skin
  • Mental symptoms, depression, and later inquietude and irritability
  • Spasms that can develop by the sight of water (fear of water, hydrophobia)

Way of spread

The disease develops through the bite of the infected animal, and spreads by its saliva and secretion.

Long term effect

Once symptoms appear it nearly always results in death.

Curing

There is no cure against rabies, only the relief of the suffering is possible.

Prevention

If somebody travels to places where there are lots of pye-dogs and infected animals often bite people (Afghanistan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Bolivia, China, Columbia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Yemen and several African countries), it is recommended to get the vaccination prior to travel. If somebody has been bitten by an animal and has been injected before against rabies then revaccination is necessary.

If somebody has been bitten again by an animal with the suspicion of being infected by rabies, and has received the entire vaccination series in the past 5 years, then 2x1 doses of vaccination is necessary to receive on day 0. and day 3.

In Hungary, if somebody has been bitten again by an animal with the suspicion of being infected by rabies, and has not received any immunization at all or has received the entire vaccination series later than 5 years, the person has to be given the vaccination of 4 doses 3 times according to the following order (2-1-1) day 0., day 7. and day 21.

People exposed to higher risk of infection, as well as people with an immune system with lower level of operation (primary and secondary immunodeficiency) has to receive 6 doses of vaccine 5 times, according to the following order: 2x1 doses on day 0., and 1 dose on day 3.3, 7., 14., and 28.
